Claustrophobia is an irrational or abnormal fear of being in small and enclosed spaces. It is a type of anxiety disorder that arises when there is a dysfunction of part of the brain that is responsible for processing fear.
Persons who are suffering from claustrophobia have these feelings triggered by certain situations such being in a small airplane. It could as well be triggered when in a small room that has no windows. Also feelings of calustrophobia occur when inside an elevator. When such feelings arise, it can sometimes lead to a panic attack.
The various signs and symptoms include having a sense of choking, cold sweat, increased heart rate, hot flashes, feelings of nausea, and so on.
