An ultimatum is a demand or statement of terms and conditions, which if not met will result in an end to a relationship or other serious consequences. It is an offer in which you either accept or reject. In relationships, certain situations and circumstances can give rise to an ultimatum.
For instance when a girl has been dating someone for a long time and does not really like the way her man treats her in front of his friends, she could give him an ultimatum to change his ways or she walks out of the relationship.
Also, a government of a country might give another government an ultimatum to do something or face some negative consequences. Sometimes, the consequence could be a withdrawal of some benefits received from that government or sometimes war.
All in all, an ultimatum is a take-it-or-leave-it offer.
