Normally, when a baby is conceived and it starts its development process in the womb, the neural tube develops into the brain and spinal cord. However, where there is an abnormality in the development of the spinal cord and brain, it leads to neural tube defects.

neural tube defects

The cause of neural tube defects is not exactly known but it is believed that genetics, nutrition, and environmental factors could play a role. In the aspect of nutrition, insufficient folic acid; a form of B vitamin, before and during pregnancy can result in neural tube defects.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for neural tube defects. However, it is advised that women who are of childbearing age should try as much as possible to get enough folic acid before and during pregnancy in order to reduce the risks of neural tube defects.
