The term regression is used in statistics and other disciplines to determine the strength of the relationship between one dependent variable and other variables. However, this term is also used to refer to the act of something going back or returning to its former state.

regression

The act of regression can be seen in everyday life. For instance, children usually put up regressive behaviors like temper tantrums to show their frustrations. Another example is when adults act like children on meeting old schoolmates. Furthermore, regression may make people suffering from mental health issues to sometimes cry uncontrollably like children.

Furthermore, some people use the act of regression to shield themselves from the realities of present problematic situations by acting like a child instead of an adult. For example, an individual cuddling a teddy to sleep in an attempt not to think of a present difficult situation.

All in all, anything that makes you go back to an earlier state is a regression.
