A hostage is someone who is taken forcefully as a prisoner by an enemy in order to secure the enemy’s demand. Hostage situations may be caused by different conditions. For instance, some terrorists may take citizens of another country hostage due to a political disagreement between the two nations.

In such situations, hostages may be released when the demands of the takers are met. This is usually after negotiations with the officials in charge. Other times, hostages may not be released even when the taker's demands have been met.

Another condition that may bring about a hostage situation is a mentally deranged person who probably has been hurt in the past and as a result is depressed. Such persons can take one or more people hostage which may sometimes lead to the murder of the hostage.

Hostage takers have several characteristics. They can be emotionally unstable, violent, arrogant, and even sometimes charming. It is always better to stay away from people who may show some of these characteristics. Also, stay away from people whom you are not comfortable with.
